Hello, I have a new cut, a V2 AAF that does nicely into the New Seq part of MB. I have lots of DX edits in Pro Tools, exported an AAF (v1) and that looks correct in the Old Seq window. But no matter what Compare choice I try, there are no Diffs showing up after MB Compares, audio, video, or anything. I’ve tried with and without selecting the clips in both windows. Also exported a .MOV form Pro Tools to add to the Old MB section. Really at a loss at why I can’t get MB to find Diffs. I’d appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you!
PS Just to add more info, the two versions are significantly different. reconfirmed the PT session by hand. thought MB would at least be able to id changes by audio. Paid for the full version of MB, and will have more new cuts coming from the director. So I’ll appreciate any tips for helping me get MB working for me. Thanks!
Where did your AAFs come from? Dont try exporting AAF from Pro Tools - they are notoriously buggy and this is not a supported workflow in Matchbox.
The idea is to use data from your picture hand-overs to compare the latest version against the previous. The data inside pro tools is irrelevant to the first stage of using Matchbox (matching).
Matchbox compares the old AAF (from your picture editor) against the new AAF (also from picture editor) to figure out in general terms what the big moves, inserts and deletions are. It then applies these moves, inserts and deletes by copy./pasting your Pro Tools work and assembling the new cut on an empty stretch of your timeline.
If you have not already watched the demo videos, that’s a good place to start:
Here’s a basic Pro Tools reconform using video refs, but there’s a lot of other more detailed tutorials on there as well:
Thanks for your note, kinda guessed it might be a problem from the editor AAF/MXF export from DaVinci. Watched the MB 2 PT many mucho times, ha ha. I understand what’s supposed to happen in PT, but I’m getting nothing in the Differences window. Seems like you have a blurb or video on what to ask for from the editor, and I’l pay close attention to those details. Meanwhile, I’ve developed some skill at manual reconfirming, which will probably help me understand MB healing, etc. Luckily the editors an producers will be distracted for a while as they’re planning a new project that starts Friday. That gives me breathing room to continue editing post and reading more about MB. Thank you!
Okay, so the AAFs I have from Resolve are not functional as far as MB is concerned. However, I have completed quite a bit of editing in Pro Tools from the MB-unfriendly AAF (before I purchased MB, fwiw). So, can I backload (import session data) an XML or OTIO (from my editor, same cut as before) into one of my Pro Tools sessions so that MB will have a point of reference when the inevitable new cut arrives? This would essentially be a doubled session, adding unedited, original audio beneath my edited DX, FX, MX, etc. (And maybe you can see the logic of why I tried exporting an AAF from Pro Tools for MB to read?) In other words, I need two properly exported XML or OTIO files from the editor, and right now I’m working on an AAF-derived PT session that MB can’t read. So even if I get a second, properly exported file, MB will not work because it can’t read the first AAF for comparison. So I’m trying to not have to manually reconform, and get MB to recognize the edits I have now.
Do not try to read your Pro Tools session with MB. There is no reliable way (currently), and this is a nonsensical workflow for Matchbox.
If Resolve is giving you garbage AAFs, then you need to use something else. Perhaps the Video ref or a dialog GT. You just need some kind of data for both the OLD and the NEW cuts.
