Hello,
Before I describe my problem I would like to state in advance that I already read through the whole forum and tried a lot of things including all the recommendations like reduce undos, make tracks inactive, thin automation, opening folder tracks, session file backups etc. None of that really solved the problem. Also I tried it with several PT Versions on several Macs including Intel and M Chips.
I have a fairly big sound design session with 200 tracks, devided in 11 subgroups and some aux sends. The clips of every subgroup are grouped seperately which is something I cant waive. There are roughly 450 match ranges in my changelist, so a lot of edits. I realize that the amount of group clips that are created in Pro Tools through the edits are causing the main problem here. If I only conform one Subgroup at a time I dont have a problem. However if I want to do it all together I get the Range Err on every single paste. So MB has to repeat every paste and the further I get the longer it takes to repeat it. Which brings me to my main problem. Entering the TCs for copying works fine. But for pasting MB pastes the end time also in the start time and then starts to paste. Then realizes that its not possible to paste, as there is no selection. So MB pastes the right start and end time and proceeds to paste the clips properly. This process also increases in time after every edit during the reconform until I get ETAs of literally thousands of minutes. I realize that I could just do one subgroup at a time, but it seems like a fixable issue to me. I would appreciate any help. Maybe there is something I missed. I could also provide a video of my transport window.
Thanks in advance
That sounds like the undo history is long and Pro Tools is getting bogged down with so many changes happening so quickly. I know you say you’ve reduced the undo history, but maybe double check that.
Clip groups are just really inefficient in Pro Tools, so this would be making the situation worse.
It definitely sounds like you want Matchbox to be on a slower reconform speed setting, but if you’ve already tried that and done all the other recommendations, there’s really only 1 trick left:
Using a Pro Tools version less than 2023.12, enable the PT Scripting API pref in Matchbox.
They changed/broke that feature in recent Pro Tools builds, but it will help with the issue of PT getting the wrong timeline range before copy/paste.
So to be clear, this definitely sounds like PT getting bogged down. Any “fix” is really just trying to give PT more time to think, and less to remember.
I just tried it with PT 2020.9 with exactly the same settings and that fixed it, indeed. Strangely it also helped to group all subgroups together and then ungroup to the subgroups after reconforming. I guess that reduces the overall amount of groups which is less work for Pro Tools. Thank you very much!
well that is really bizarre. 2020.9 doesn’t;'t even have the option of the Scripting API.
And more nested groups should only make memory wastage worse in Pro Tools.
Do you have “markers follow edit” on? It’s broken on all versions before 23.12 and slows PT down to a crawl (like 30+ seconds for every single copy/paste/cut operation). Just asking as you didn’t say what version you’re on normally. If you’re not on 23.12 or newer turn “markers follow edit” off or update PT to a newer version.
